Rochester ( / ˈ r ɒ tʃ ɪ s t ər / or / ˈ r ɒ tʃ ɛ s t ər / ) is a city on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in western New York State. Rochester is the third most populous city in New York, with over 210,000 residents, and its metropolitan area has a population of nearly 1.1 million people. [4]

The 25th edition of the Places Rated Almanac rated Rochester as the "most livable city" in 2007, among 379 U.S. metropolitan areas. [8] In 2010 Forbes rated Rochester as the third-best place to raise a family. [9] In 2012 Kiplinger rated Rochester as the fifth-best city for families, citing low cost of living, top public schools, and a low jobless rate. [10]

The Seneca tribe of Native Americans lived in and around Rochester until they lost their claim to most of this land in the Treaty of Big Tree in 1797. [11] Settlement before the Seneca tribe is unknown.

Staten Island had the Fresh Kills Landfill , which was the world's largest landfill before closing in 2001, [8] although it was temporarily reopened that year to receive debris from the September 11 attacks. [9] The landfill is being redeveloped as Freshkills Park , an area devoted to restoring habitat; the park will become New York City's second largest public park when completed. [10]

As in much of North America, human habitation appeared in the island fairly rapidly after the retreat of the ice sheet. Archaeologists have recovered tool evidence of Clovis culture activity dating from about 14,000 years ago. This evidence was first discovered in 1917 in the Charleston section of the island. Various Clovis artifacts have been discovered since then, on property owned by Mobil Oil.

The island was probably abandoned later, possibly because of the extirpation of large mammals on the island. Evidence of the first permanent Native American settlements and agriculture are thought to date from about 5,000 years ago, [12] although early archaic habitation evidence has been found in multiple locations on the island.
