Approximately 330 to 360 million people speak English as their first language. [1] The United States has the most native speakers at 258 million. Additionally, there are 62 million native English speakers in the United Kingdom , 32 million in Canada , 20 million in Australia , and 4.5 million in New Zealand. Other countries also use English as their primary and official languages.

Estimates that include second language speakers vary greatly, from 470 million to more than 1 billion. David Crystal calculates that non-native speakers as of 2003 outnumbered native speakers by a ratio of 3 to 1. [3] When combining native and non-native speakers, English is the second most widely spoken language worldwide.

Besides the major varieties of English , such as American English , British English , Indian English , Canadian English , Australian English , Irish English , New Zealand English and their sub-varieties, countries such as South Africa , the Philippines , Jamaica and Nigeria also have millions of native speakers of dialect continua ranging from English-based creole languages to Standard English.

In 1958, Essen was chosen to serve as the seat to a Roman Catholic diocese (often referred to as Ruhrbistum or diocese of the Ruhr ). In early 2003, the universities of Essen and the nearby city of Duisburg (both established in 1972) were merged into the University of Duisburg-Essen with campuses in both cities and a university hospital in Essen.

Essen is located in the centre of the Ruhr area, one of the largest urban areas in Europe (see also: megalopolis ), comprising eleven independent cities and four districts with some 5.3 million inhabitants. The city limits of Essen itself are 87 km (54 mi) long and border ten cities, five independent and five kreisangehörig (i.e., belonging to a district), with a total population of approximately 1.4 million. The city extends over 21 km (13 mi) from north to south and 17 km (11 mi) from west to east, mainly north of the River Ruhr.

The lowest point can be found in the northern borough of Karnap at 26.5 m (86.9 ft), the highest point in the borough of Heidhausen at 202.5 m (664 ft). The average elevation is 116 m (381 ft).

I’ve spent the last few years traveling and living abroad, and during that time I’ve talked to a lot of people who spoke English as a foreign language.

After talking to thousands of foreigners in English I’ve noticed several things that they do that hurt their progress as a language learner.

There is only one way to learn how to speak English, and that is to open your mouth and speak English ! The only way you will ever get better at speaking is by speaking, and speaking a lot!

Hello Thomas, Usually flight price depends on how much before the actual flight date you buy it. Usually the earlier you book it the cheaper it will be. Since you are talking about next year you still have some time. Usually flights prices varies between 600 and 800 euros (two-ways flight ticket). search on the interenet for some good flight deals - you can try United Airlines ( http://www.united.com/ - Ive tried them they are pretty good,) Virgin Atlantic ( http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/), Expedia http://www.expedia.dk Good luck!
