Claim 'whole of the European Union is going to suffer terribly because of Brexit is a bit rich frankly', says Dutch politician

The first vice-president of the European Commission has mocked the UK's post-Brexit trade ambitions by comparing a Ukip MEP to a comically over-confident character from a Monty Python film.

Frans   Timmermans likened Eurosceptic politician Ray Finch to the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail , a hopelessly optimistic character who refuses to concede a fight even after all his limbs are severed.

Eric Idle (born 29 March 1943) is an English comedian, actor, voice actor, author, singer-songwriter, musician, writer and comedic composer. Idle is a member of the British surreal comedy group Monty Python , a member of The Rutles and the author of the Broadway musical Spamalot .

Idle attended Pembroke College, Cambridge , where he studied English. At Pembroke, he was invited to join the prestigious Cambridge University Footlights Club by the president of the Footlights Club, Tim Brooke-Taylor , and Footlights Club member Bill Oddie.

The second-youngest member of the Pythons, Idle was closest in spirit to the students and teenagers who made up much of Python's fanbase. Python sketches dealing most with contemporary obsessions like pop music, sexual permissiveness and recreational drugs are usually Idle's work, often characterised by double entendre , sexual references, and other "naughty" subject matter – most famously demonstrated in " Nudge Nudge." Idle originally wrote "Nudge, Nudge" for Ronnie Barker , but it was rejected because there was 'no joke in the words'. [8]

There was also an effort to differentiate between types of newsgroup spam. Messages that were crossposted to too many newsgroups at once – as opposed to those that were posted too frequently – were called velveeta (after a cheese product). But this term didn't persist. [13]

In the late 19th Century Western Union allowed telegraphic messages on its network to be sent to multiple destinations. The first recorded instance of a mass unsolicited commercial telegram is from May 1864, when some British politicians received an unsolicited telegram advertising a dentistry shop. [14]

The earliest documented spam (although the term had not yet been coined [15] ) was a message advertising the availability of a new model of Digital Equipment Corporation computers sent by Gary Thuerk to 393 recipients on ARPANET in 1978. [11] Rather than send a separate message to each person, which was the standard practice at the time, he had an assistant, Carl Gartley, write a single mass email. Reaction from the net community was fiercely negative, but the spam did generate some sales. [16] [17]
