As the war in Vietnam wound down with the signing of the 1973 Paris Peace Accords, the war in neighboring Cambodia was going from bad to worse.

On January 10, FANK’s 22nd Brigade pulled out of Krek near the area known to the Americans as the Fishhook, on the Vietnamese-Cambodian border, leaving Route 7, one of the last remaining open roads linking Cambodia and South Vietnam, to the enemy. Farther south that day, the first FANK offensive of the year was launched below Route 1, leading through the area known as the Parrot’s Beak into Vietnam. The 11 battalions of Operation Prek Ta, a FANKArmy of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) joint venture, made a lot of noise but the offensive proved inconclusive.

The rake-off from padded rosters was more than $1,000,000 monthly. The government finally admitted that around 100,000 of its troops did not exist. To compound those problems, families followed their soldier-providers into battle zones, and pre-teen children were enlisted. Unpaid soldiers would be involved in food riots in Phnom Penh in September. But the government was not overly concerned. As Lon Nol had said earlier, ‘It is very difficult for foreigners to understand developments in Cambodia. I would only advise that no one worry too much.’

Combat disruptions and the loss of farmland made the republic equally dependent on provisions convoyed up the Mekong, offloaded on the Gulf of Thailand, or flown in by military and civilian aircraft. Incredibly, life in Phnom Penh whose population had tripled in a decade to nearly 1.5 million went on as usual, with no lack of luxury goods for those with the means.

To protest the Vietnam War, I broke into a federal building. Half a century later, I finally got the chance to ask the judge why he made the shocking decision to let me walk.

O n a warm spring morning 44 years ago, I stood before a federal judge who was about to sentence me and four friends for crimes we freely confessed to having committed. I was 22 years old, a draft card-burning, long-haired hippie, anti-war activist college dropout, and now, a convicted felon. We’d been arrested nine months earlier, in the dead of night, inside a federal office building in my hometown of Buffalo, New York, charged with crimes that could send us to prison for twelve years.

The man we stood before that warm spring morning was U.S. District Court Judge John T. Curtin, a former Marine whose mild Irish-American countenance and soft-spoken, deferential manner belied the gung-ho Marine stereotype of John Wayne going up against merciless enemy fire.

U.S. actions to permanently divide the country and establish a foreign-backed government in the south provoked strong resistance.  In an interview with the American historian Christian Appy, General Vo Nguyen Giap, the military architect of victories over the French and the Americans, explained why Vietnamese resistance fighters fought and prevailed:

National aspirations must be respected; peoples may now be dominated and governed only by their own consent.  “Self-determination” is not a mere phrase. It is an imperative principle of actions which statesmen will henceforth ignore at their peril. [11]

Yet the victorious allies neither accepted Ho’s letter nor endorsed the principle of national self-determination for colonized peoples outside Europe.  Instead, France and Great Britain expanded their empires in the Middle East.  Ho’s efforts nevertheless made him famous in Vietnam.

Sophie Turner, best known as Sansa Stark in the hit HBO show Game of Thrones , has a lot of followers on social media. And according to Turner, producers take that kind of thing into consideration when casting different projects. In fact, Turner says that she only got a recent acting gig because she has a large presence on social media.

Turner has built up a huge audience online, with 1.35 million followers on Twitter , 5.4 million followers on Instagram , and over 2 million followers on Facebook. And according to a new interview, those numbers helped her secure a role that may have been better suited to an actress with fewer followers.

“A lot of what I have achieved is about timing and luck, but it is also, and I hate to say it, about a big social-media following,” Turner said in the latest issue of Porter magazine.

Ichiro Miyato, of the 27th Radar Squad (Southern Kyushu), returned to his radar screen after helping carry material for the new construction, which, when completed, would provide a more powerful and well-camouflaged radar installation intended to detect, at a great distance, the anticipated invasion by American forces.

Miyato, his tour scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., noticed the wall clock showing 10:45. He initialed the logbook under the date August 9, 1945. No sooner seated, he spotted a blip moving southward. He watched the radar make two more sweeps; still only the one blip appeared. Scanning frequencies, he found interference indicating the blip was using its own radar.

‘Looks like a lone B-San running radar I’d guess it’s mapping,’ he advised his command headquarters. ‘Altitude probably 10,000 meters out of triple A and fighter range.’ After a couple more sweeps he plotted the vector and reported, ‘Their course will take them over Nagasaki if you want to alert Civil Defense.’ Nagasaki lay 25 kilometers south of the radar station.
