In 1943, British archaeologist Bernard Fagg received a visitor in the central Nigerian town of Jos, where he had spent the previous few years gathering and classifying ancient artifacts found on a rugged plateau. The visitor carried a terracotta head that, he said, had been perched atop a scarecrow in a nearby yam field. Fagg was intrigued. The piece resembled a terracotta monkey head he had seen a few years earlier, and neither piece matched the artifacts of any known ancient African civilization.

Thus, in short order, Fagg had discovered some of the key markers of an advanced civilization: refined art and organized worship, metal smelting, and sufficient population to support these activities. But he knew such a society did not appear in isolation. Fagg, now back at Oxford University in England, wrote that Nok culture had almost certainly begun earlier and survived longer than he had evidence for at the time. "It was the product of a mature tradition," he wrote, "with the probability of a long antecedent history, of which as yet, no trace has been found."

Nigeria has a reputation for chaos, corruption, and expensive visas that has kept archaeologists away and drastically slowed the pace of research. In 1959, anthropologist George Murdock quipped that for every ton of earth moved by archaeologists on the Nile, a teaspoon is moved on the Niger. Scholarship has also been hampered by an almost 40-year campaign of looting at Nok sites fed by the growing appetite for African antiquities among collectors in the United States and Europe.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody had any advice concerning safety in the DRC? I have always wanted to go on a gorilla safari in Africa (maybe a few other chimps too), so I'm just doing a few checks. One place that I am thinking of going is the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. My main concerns are the journeys to and from the airport once landing in the country.

No its called a romance scam or sweetheart scam. This isnt a girlfriend, it s some boy in an internet cafe in Lagos pretending to be a girl, who copied pictures off some model s site. If you cant pay the hotel, they kick you out on the street, they wouldnt keep you there where you would run up even higher bills. Dont send any money to this person, it s not true. Google stuck in hotel scam to see you are not the first victim, it happend so often on online dating sites there are webpages devoted to this specific scam I bet she asked you to send money Western Union or Moneygram, a sure sign you are dealing with a scammer. If this person is foreign and for some reason were being held in a hotel, the would call their embassy who would immediately come to the hotel with the Nigerian police to get her out, give an emergency loan to pay any bills, and help arrange transport home. They dont ask a person theyve never met except online, that s always the sign of a scam

100% scam. There is no apartment or house for rent. There is only a scammer trying to steal your hard-earned money with stolen pictures of someone else s dwelling and a fake story of being out of town/state/country doing charitable works. The next email will be from another of the scammer s fake names and free email addresses and will demand you pay for rent and deposit, in cash, and only by Western Union or moneygram. The scammer might suggest you "send" money to a friend or to yourself and then send a scan of the receipt to the scammer as proof you have the funds. The scammer will simply that take scanned receipt or just the MTCN# (money transfer control number) into Western Union or moneygram store and pick up the cash you thought you were sending to a friend or yourself. Western Union and moneygram do not verify anything on the form the sender fills out, not the name, not the street address, not the country, not even the gender of the receiver, it all means absolutely nothing. The clerk will not bother to check ID and will simply hand off your cash to whomever walks in the door with the MTCN# and question/answer. Neither company will tell the sender who picked up the cash, at what store location or even in what country your money walked out the door. Neither company has any kind of refund policy, money sent is money gone forever. Now that you have responded to a scammer, you are on his potential sucker list, he will try again to separate you from your cash. He will send you more emails from his other free email addresses using another of his fake names with all kinds of stories of great places to rent, lottery winnings, millions in the bank and desperate, lonely, sexy singles. He will sell your email address to all his scamming buddies who will also send you dozens of fake emails all with the exact same goal, you sending them your cash via Western Union or moneygram. Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don t bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn t worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash. Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer. If you google "fake apartment rental", "fraud Western Union house rent scam", "fake craigslist apartment rent scam" or something similar you will find hundreds of posts from victims and near-victims of this type of scam. Wasting a scammer s time legally and safely is called "scambaiting". If you google that word, you will find sites where you can read scambaits, post up the emails and email addresses of scammers, post up a fake website, read up on how to alert a hosting company that they are hosting a fake website, ask questions and learn all about the hobby of scambaiting.
